Fine Arts
The Department of Fine Arts was established in 1990 and covers education across the spectrum of the traditional visual arts. It is divided into studios led by distinguished artists and tutors, who have been active at AAAD in Prague throughout its history. The fine art disciplines are developed on one hand in relation to other schools specializing in fine arts, and on the other in collaboration with the academy’s departments of applied art and design. Creative tutorial leadership of the studios in conjunction with interdisciplinary dialogue create a specific potential for study of the fine arts. An integral component of learning in the department consists of lectures and seminars on art history, aesthetics and social sciences, which provide students with a grounding in the history of their specific fields and in the humanities. Studio teaching accentuates contextual thinking and develops dialogue between the work of art and nature, space, architecture, history and social processes. Alongside the specific tuition of the studios, the department also provides training in the disciplines of figurative drawing, sculpture and digital media technologies.
Many eminent figures have left their mark on AAAD’s Department of Fine Arts throughout its history:
Josef Václav Myslbek, Jakub Schikaneder, František Ženíšek, Stanislav Sucharda, Jan Preisler, Ladislav Šaloun, Josef Mařatka, Otto Gutfreund, Jan Lauda, Jan Bauch, Emil Filla, Josef Kaplický, Josef Wagner, Alois Fišárek, Bedřich Stefan, František Tichý, Jan Kavan and others.
