UMPRUM at Designblok

"UMPRUM regularly participates in representative design shows abroad. We are aware that the Czech audience does not always have the opportunity to see the exhibitions live. Designblok offers an ideal opportunity to present one of the foreign exhibitions in the Czech Republic and introduce it to the general public. This year, Designblok visitors can look forward to the multimedia exhibition UMPRUM.wav", says Ida Chuchlíková, Vice-Rector for External Relations, about the concept of the exhibition.

UMPRUM.wav will be presented in the Studio Hrdinů. The project of the Studio of Product Design, led by Michal Froňek and Jan Němeček, offers a way to perceive music and musical instruments from a non-traditional perspective. The connection between the world of music and the world of design is represented by the students' unique original musical instruments combining unconventional acoustic, and visual compositions. A special mixing desk invites visitors to play with sound and immerse themselves in a duality of analogue and digital, acoustic, and visual experimental experiences. The collaborative project is the culmination of collaboration across product, graphic, and digital design, as well as collaborations with the Faculty of Education at Charles University, musician and composer Never Sol, and the company Quix.

The UM Gallery will open its doors on Jana Palacha Square during Designblok and offer visitors the exhibition Local Wool, which is the culmination of a successful dissertation project by Ph.D. student Linda Havrlíková. The exhibition not only presents the author's collection of woolen garments but also offers ways to reinvigorate the long-standing tradition of processing the fleece of Czech sheep. "I consider craft to be the cornerstone of the process. One should take it holistically and deal with all components - from raw materials to the final product", explains Linda Havrlíková, who, among other things, breeds her own sheep.

In addition, to these two large exhibitions, the Designblok show will also present the work of individual students and teachers. Karla Kislingerová, a student of the Textile Studio, is presenting "Where is my home?" as part of the Designblok theme Talent Cards, her original tapestries are created using the Art Protis technique. Gréta Kušnírová, a student of the Ceramics and Porcelain Studio, together with graduates Quynh Trang Tran and Zuzana Viszusová are exhibiting their joint project Ráj in the Designblok Open Studio. STUDIO23 is also represented at the HIGH CRAFT exhibition, which includes Václav Černý, a student of the Studio Fashion and Footwear Design. As part of their debut, they will present the MYTH24 LINE model line.

UMPRUM has been an integral part of Designblok for many years. In this year's edition, the two large exhibitions mentioned above also represent the very genetic code of the school, in which on the one hand you will find free-thinking experimentation based on transdisciplinary collaboration across studios, including the involvement of the private sector, and on the other hand you will find respect for traditional craftsmanship and research into new ways of enabling its further development and innovation.
