The follow-up master’s degree program is aimed at the acquisition of theoretical knowledge regarding modern and contemporary art, architecture and design, on mastering application of this knowledge and on developing the capacity for creative activities in the said field. The field provides specific knowledge and presents special methods necessary for analysis and interpretation of modern and contemporary art. The student should learn not only how to analyze and interpret works of modern and contemporary art, but also to place them in a historical context. The lectures, seminars and other forms of learning are directed towards acquainting the student with up-to-date art history methodology and developing the ability to integrate her/his part in the cultural values and standards of the present time. One of the main principles of this field of study is to bring critical and theoretic reaction closer to contemporary artistic practice.
The goal is to nurture erudite critics, theoreticians, historians, curators and educators capable of implementing the acquired knowledge and approaches both in the relevant area of art infrastructure and in academic research. The students are prepared for work in museums, galleries and scientific institutions as well as in studios dealing with design and new visual media. They may work in the field both conceptually and strategically. Graduates may also find application in the formation of expert discussion in the neglected field of art criticism and publicity. The art education system, which has a great deficit of experts on contemporary art and design in particular, also presents opportunities for graduates.
The course is conducted in the department Theory and History of Art.
