UMPRUM at Designblok - Cooperation, emphasis on quality fabrication and knowledge of craft as well as sustainability
2.–6. 10. 2024
various venues in Prague city centre
An unconventional fashion installation that attracted attention in Milan, ideas on how to sustainably process unused components of bentwood chairs, or an exhibition that pushes the boundaries of techniques and craftsmanship. This is a general description of the main exhibitions of the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague at this year's Designblok. Not only these, but also other UMPRUM exhibitions can be visited in addition to the main exhibition spaces of the event at various locations in the center of Prague.
The joint project of the Studio of Fashion and Footwear Design and the WAKE Product Design Studio reflects on the contemporary role of formal wear and the rules associated with it. The unmissable installation premiered at Milano Design Week and will now be on display at the UMPRUM Technology Center on Mikulandska Street. WAKE is based on the assignment "Red Carpet" by the Studio of Fashion and Footwear Design under the direction of Simona Rybáková, in which students creatively reassessed the current state of formal dress codes. Themes of sustainability - recycling - upcycling, zero waste; social design, working with natural materials or maintaining traditional craft techniques are evident in the fashion designs.
The theme of sustainability also resonates in the project of the Studio of Furniture and Interior Design. The studio noticed how many segments in the production of bentwood furniture are created that do not meet the highest standards for further production. That's why they decided to prepare a series of interior accessories for TON that skillfully process unusable components. The aim was not only to reduce waste material, but above all to promote development, sustainability and offer new limited editions with added value. Students came up with a plethora of ideas including bowls, cassettes, shelves or even ping-pong paddles.
Part of UMPRUM's presentation at Designblok is also the exhibition Boundaries of Serendipity in the UM Gallery. It presents three young artists, students and graduates of UMPRUM: Karolína Kučerová and sisters Paula and Františka Benčaťová. Their works are united by the artist's deep sensitivity to material, experimentation and at the same time a feeling for reinterpretation of the moment.
The Designblok will also feature a project by the Studio of Fashion and Footwear Design and the Studio of Graphic Design and Visual Communication, which was realised for Kaufland. Together they designed the K-LOOK collection of leisurewear, which works with the company's visual identity. It will be exhibited as part of the KAUF LOVE installation in the Designblok Superstudio at the Museum of Prague.
The results of the collaboration between the Studio of Glass and the Czech glass brand KLIMCHI will be on display in the Superstudio - Riding Hall of Prague Castle. Five collections of table glass selected by students will be presented. Their works will enrich the glass manufacturers' assortment in the coming months.
UMPRUM students will not be absent from the selection of Designblok Talent Cards, which will be on display at the Museum of Decorative Arts. Among the three outstanding student works, "Cube Cabinet & Half Vase" by Filip Hrubý from the Glass Studio and "MŇAM MINIVAN" by Gréta Kušnírová, a student of the Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain, are represented.
The UMPRUM exhibitions at this year's Designblok are a telling example of how the school is evolving and where it is heading. There is a deep emphasis on sustainability, precise mastery of craft and technology, and collaboration, not only between disciplines and studios themselves, but also with real clients. UMPRUM's goal is to educate and nurture professionals in the field of artistic, research and scientific activities, to cultivate free thinking, independent scientific research and artistic creation in its own right, as well as to support the creative spirit of human society in every way. UMPRUM is a partner on the path to an independent creative life and enables its students to develop their creative potential to the greatest extent possible in collaboration with their professional practice during their studies.
