Typofix lectures –⁠ prof. Karsten Rinas and Boril Karaivanov

Prof. Karsten Rinas from the Department of Germanic Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the Palacký University, an expert in the history of linguistics, will present the development of European punctuation, which originated in ancient rhetoric and grammar. He will focus on fundamental changes such as the transition from the rhetorical period to the sentence. Another topic will be the evolution of the punctuation inventory and the relationship between punctuation and free space.

Boril Karaivanov, typographer and founder of the For Bulgarian Cyrillic initiative, will focus on Bulgarian typographic rules and the peculiarities of the Bulgarian Cyrillic form, punctuation and the challenges faced by typographers in Bulgaria.

 

Prof. Dr. Karsten Rinas studied German language and literature, Philosophy and General linguistics at the University of Cologne. In 1997 he came to the Czech Republic as a lecturer, where he has lived since. Since 2006 prof. Rinas has been teaching linguistics at the Department of German Studies at the Palacký University in Olomouc. His main professional interests include syntax, semantics and history of linguistics.

Boril Karaivanov is a book designer, illustrator and typographer by education, who has worked in the fields of graphic design, advertising and the Internet. He is from the first generation of web designers in Bulgaria and participates in the realisation of projects, noteworthy for the development of the Bulgarian digital scene.

 

These public lectures in English will take place within the European Typographic Proofreader project. This project is co-financed with the state support of the Czech Technology Agency within the SIGMA Programme.
