UMPRUM in Prague will welcome experimental filmmaker, book designer and printmaker Judith Poirier, who works at the School of Design at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).She will present Fraktura, her typographic horror movie, and discuss her animation process—an aleatoric approach to letterpress printing and sound production. Additionally, she will introduce Latitude, her modular wood type system that merges Inuktitut syllabics with the Roman alphabet. This work-in-progress is part of a larger project, Hypercodex: Publishing and Hybridity in the Post-Digital Era.

Judith Poirier

Judith Poirier (MA, Royal College of Art, London) is a professor at the School of Design at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), as well as an experimental filmmaker, book designer, and letterpress practitioner. Her work explores typography and abstraction. Her films have been screened at numerous international festivals and have led to residencies at renowned print shops, including the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers, the Center for Book and Paper Arts in Chicago, Hatch Show Print in Nashville, and the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz.
