Intaglio Printing

Type of workshop: Departmental Workshop

Intaglio printing is one of several graphic techniques used to reproduce a work for a specified number of copies, with each of the copies of that edition being considered the original and not a copy.
The printing form is embossed and the printing elements are recessed below the level of the non-printing elements. The printing areas are filled with thin, fast-drying ink, and during printing, the ink is transferred by the printed material, mostly with moist paper.

The risograph is still a widespread high-speed digital printing system. It may remind contemporary witnesses of the sophisticated successor to cyclostyle. At a number of copies between twenty and ten thousand pieces, it is the cheapest reproduction alternative, originally intended for the rapid multiplication of printed materials. However, the risograph quickly became a popular choice for printing non-commercial periodicals - among alternative cultures, original author's books, and magazines. It prints in direct color tones and has an expanded range of registration.
