Graduation Projects evaluates the best diploma theses of art school graduates from universities in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. A selection of the best is regularly presented at an exhibition in Cieszyn, Poland. Out of 380 entries, a total of 30 works were selected in two categories - 2D and 3D.
From the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM), the bachelor's thesis by Pavla Nečásková from the Studio of Type Design Typography was selected. Pavla's bachelor thesis explores her subjective approach to antiqua type design. It focuses on the process of character deformation in print reproductions of movable metal type and how this vibrancy can be explored and restored from analog printing techniques, in the digital world without replicating the clichés of print imperfections.
Translating vibrancy from printed type to the digital world is central to both the theoretical and practical parts of the catalogue. Pavla as an imaginary scientist, a collector of ideas, graphic notations, my essays and documentations of failed journeys that are brought together in one pseudo-scientific diary. It also covers six drafts of her author’s typefaces that try to fulfill the previous ideas. The designs are accompanied by her diary-like input, both technical and personal.
Pavla´s work is a message about the process of trying, observing, learning, succeeding and failing in type design. The created typefaces do not stand on their own, they are presented in a procedural stage. They form a symbiotic compilation of applied ideas.
